About this deal

The first generation of DisplayPort was introduced in 2006, and it’s gone through several successive generations since, though until the launch of DisplayPort 2.

DisplayPort Alt Mode allows USB-C connections to utilize DisplayPort transmission interface to transmit video and audio to and/or from a USB-C port. This standard defines a type of digital audio/video connection intended to be used mainly in the connection between computers and monitors, or between computers and Home Theater systems.is sufficient to support a 4K, 24-bit color monitor at a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz, but it is not able to support the new generation of higher resolution 6K and 8K displays without resorting to compression. With each update of the DisplayPort standard, more bandwidth is required to support higher video resolutions, refresh rates and color depths. Thankfully this is just a straight forward replacement in the version number, with all devices that were previously certified as DP 2. Using this approach, a DisplayPort signal can be transmitted about three times further than an active DisplayPort cable–approximately 100 meters (328 ft. standards support the newer UHBR transmission modes, offering up to 80 Gbps of total bandwidth, or 77.

This should be good news for gamers and virtual reality (VR) enthusiasts, who look for ultra-high resolutions and refresh rates. For instance you can run two displays with a 7680 × 4320 resolution (8K) and HDR at 120Hz with 30 bpp (DSC required). This "light compression" allows video to be encoded and decoded in real time with very low latency, making it ideal for high performance applications like gaming. Although it’s marketed as 8K, it’s more like two 4K monitors sat next to each other (native 8K would be 7,680 x 4,320).That’s a way for USB-C cables to use the DisplayPort protocol to transmit video and audio at the same time as data to compatible displays.
