About this deal

Burl Audio, under the direction of owner/designer Rich Williams, has developed some of the best new recording equipment over the last eight years. I also liked the insight presented in the form of quotations by some of the very best in the recording business. Example, most books on recording will remind you to listen to your mixes from multiple sources (monitors, headphones, car, etc.

Essential pre‑mix groundwork is covered in three chapters through Part 2, dealing with timing, tuning and arrangement issues.

He was the young "balance engineer" for The Beatles on Revolver through Abbey Road, with a spell off for later White Album and Let It Be. Each month, he does a "makeover" mix of a reader-submitted song, explaining his decisions and techniques in detail. If you already know everything, pick up a copy to skim, then gift it to a friend who's starting out.

Although there definitely is some very good info on those subjects in this book, he gives you absolutely NO idea how to apply those effects to any individual instrument. On the way, you'll unravel the mysteries of every type of mix processing, from simple EQ and compression through to advanced spectral dynamics and "fairy dust" effects. Bill Cheney and Jim Romney are the men responsible for keeping the amazing legacy of Spectra Sonics, a legendary, if criminally unheralded, pro-audio company alive.

The previously mentioned book, as well as “Mix Smart” and “Using Your Portable Studio” all have that kind of info in them. Great care has been taken to ensure accuracy in the preparation of this article but neither Sound On Sound Limited nor the publishers can be held responsible for its contents. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in the fundamentals of mixing and time/project management, as well as the applications of these in live audio and in production. As a student with a classical background in a class full of people with either experience playing electric instruments or experience in music technology, I found myself confused and dragging behind. As you become successful enough to justify more expensive equipment, Mixing Secrets will be there to help you make the most out of your time and effort.

The title is something of a misnomer because the advice and guidance contained are relevant to everyone involved in music engineering and production, at all levels and regardless of the size of the studio or its facilities.

Great stuff, this book is a very complete guide to start mixing your songs on a amateur home studio. For a person with a limited budget who is willing to put in the time to work through Mike’s lesson plan, Mixing Secrets is an invaluable resource. Usefully, every chapter concludes with a 'Cut to the Chase' section summarising the key techniques and 'secrets', along with an 'Assignment' section detailing practical exercises to hone new‑found skills.
