About this deal

My passion for letterpress and typography was sparked by the gift of a John Bull set at the age of five. They also sold a very primitive little plastic printing press, which held the frame once the type was set. I just gave away a box of 1950 Wireless World's bought with my pocket money as a kid, they were stamped with my name and address with my 'John Bull' printing outfit.

For those who don’t know what on earth I am on about, I’d better explain that John Bull was the brand name and the set included long bendy strips of black rubber letters and numbers, which you cut into single letters with scissors and composed into words and sentences in a small red plastic rack with a handle at the back.

The sets were made by The Charter Stamp Company (makers presumably of those office stampers), the first one coming out in 1922 (though British Letterpress in 100 Objects has located one which seems to have been made prior to the formation of Charter). A 1916 sales receipt from a Wandsworth stationer also clearly refers to a John Bull Printing Set, eleven years before the trade mark was registered with the Department of Trade. Five years after the foundation of the Charter Stamp Company, in February 1927 the John Bull trademark was formally registered with the submission of artwork which would be used in packaging design for the next five decades. Some of the technologies we use are necessary for critical functions like security and site integrity, account authentication, security and privacy preferences, internal site usage and maintenance data, and to make the site work correctly for browsing and transactions.

A couple of days after, I was looking through some images of my friend Wayne’s recent cultural visit to Naples, Herculaneum and Vesuvius.

On 11th July 1946, the Charter Stamp Company became Carson-Baker Limited and the “Charter” trademark became “Carbak”.
