About this deal

I’ve just bought the Blu Ray set in June and now I hear that they’re coming out in the 4:3 aspect ratio? I do wish we could've gotten them in their entirety, and they are considerably preferable to what we keep getting stuck with, but I can't see them becoming a "definitive" version with these kinds of problems. Another note is that Goku has a voice filter added when he powers up to Super Saiyan 3 in front of Innocent Buu and Babidi, which is untouched on the VHS/DVD Single releases.

when Frieza goes to destroy Planet Vegeta, keeping his performance in continuity with the Namek Saga. This Box set is perfect for Dragon Ball Z Fans who grew up watching the Original Funimation Dub that was aired back in the early 2000s with the Bruce Faulconer Soundtrack (of course the Japanese Subs are also blessed. This allegedly helped to eliminate some of the grain and glue on the top and bottom of the picture and added more image to the left and right than any previous standard definition transfer, but also removed footage from the vertical aspect.

Eventually, Funimation came back with cropped 16:9 remastered versions for Blu-ray which were reportedly better than the Orange Brick DVDs but not the version that many fans had wanted. It would have been really nice to see some new sleeves and discs to differentiate this set from the last one, perhaps with the same orange colour as the outer case. Minor changes were made to Christopher Neel's original script, sometimes replacing less-mature sounding dialog, and dialogue that may have sounded awkward in the original version. One of young Goku's lines originally performed by Ceyli Delgadillo during Chi-Chi's flashback in " Gohan's First Date" was redubbed by Stephanie Nadolny, though the latter still did most of his dialogue even in the original dub. Because Yamucha says the next dimension like once and I remember Vegeta sounding like modern Sabet then early Sabet between certain lines. The Japanese audio track on this set is tinny and thin, probably because it's a very old recording made using old technology. I think I’m ok with This set I have, the steels would’ve been nice tbough if they get the right treatment. The resolution may be better, they may have gone in and fixed a few things, but I'd argue that you lose something from the original footage that I honestly prefer.

I don’t even think the prints are the biggest issue at play (some other high gen prints scanned by fans on what’s probably a better quality scanner looked pretty nice, iirc), but the low quality scan combined with awful compression really make it a tough watch. Sabat redubs his performance as Zarbon in episode 78 and also gets an extra line " Well, I suppose you know best.

Honestly would have been a much better idea, fans who grew up watching the show on Toonami would have the exact version they grew up with, and anyone that just wanted to watch the show in decent quality with its original aspect ratio, English or Japanese could do that, particularly if Funimation put out an "Edited Edition" and "Uncut Edition" for episodes 1-53 and the equivalent 1-67 respectively. First was color correction, which Franko stated was little to none, using a Da Vinci 2K Plus Color Corrector. The picture I posted is a side-by-side comparison of the picture from the DVD (on the laptop) and Blu-ray (on the TV) editions. Would it be the orange box sets or blu-ray season sets as those seem to be the only ones I can find which cover all 9 seasons? The dragon boxes cant be definitive for some rather obvious major problems but I cant think of any major issues the level sets have compared to other releases.
