About this deal

I felt the author’s most passionate chapter was the chapter on witnessing and I was quite encouraged by the author’s own example of making the most out of evangelistic opportunities.

Hughes does an excellent job of breaking down the various types of discipline that are severally lacking in masculinity today and provides simple steps to practice to improve yourself and make yourself a more Christ honoring man.Every Christian man, whether a new believer or a mature Christian, will be challenged again and again by this remarkably wise and fascinating book. And his suffering was not only the cross, but it was and is suffering that comes from identification with his bride, the church. In the current age in which we find elusive distinguishing a mere male from an actual man, this book is not only a must-reading, but also what I deemed it a whole university course, so to speak. He and his wife, Barbara, live in Spokane, Washington, and have four children and an ever-increasing number of grandchildren. I also appreciate the book recommendations near the end of each chapter and Those given by many of the pillars of our faith near the end of the book.

Some chapters are a bit repetitive and some of the examples are outdated, but overall this was a solid book and I would recommend to anyone. Kent Hughes skillfully weaves together the teachings of Scripture with real-life examples as he powerfully teaches us what true Christian manhood looks like in the ordinary details of our lives.

Hughes lays out quite the daunting challenge of living a disciplined Christian life with his 16 specific areas of discipline for the Christian man to live by.

Over 250 pages devoted to the practical outworking of discipline on subjects like purity, marriage, prayer, the tongue, the mind, our work, leadership, ministry, and many, many more. Just when we think we are the safest, when we feel no need to keep our guard up, to work on our inner integrity, to discipline ourselves for godliness - temptation will come! This book is an excellent overview of the practices that Christian men should work to incorporate into all aspects of their lives. I am therefore so grateful to God for this great aid to the overriding aim of all of our lives: Christlikeness - read it and repent.Again, chapters like being involved in church, giving money, and witnessing (evangelism) are typical and as expected. This book is rich with resources for further reading and a lot of great practical tips for the disciplines. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.

I recommend reading the book with a friend or a small group like I did, as having others to go along with you helps keep you motivated. The impure act is an act of despite against God's good gift at the very moment it is being proffered. The book is then packed with another 50 pages or so of 'resources' including the hilariously dated 'Bible on Audiocassette', which, honestly, I'm surprised made it into the updated version (the word is so old that my spell-checker is telling me I have it spelled incorrectly). This book was not only encouraging but also convicting, providing insight on how we tend to approach different situations, people, and God’s word. Discipline is a subject about which the Scriptures say much―but contemporary authors have been peculiarly silent. The events following his repentance: his baby died, his daughter Tamar was raped by her half-brother Ammon, Ammon was murdered by Tamar's full brother Absalom, and Absalom (loathing his father for his moral turpitude) eventually came to lead a rebellion under the tutelage of Bathsheba's resentful grandfather, Ahithophel. For someone who didn't have a father to invest this type of Godly influence into their lives, this book would probably be invaluable at an early age. His general point is that things aren't easy, and it takes time to accomplish things, and often it is hard just to keep going. As the title implies, this is a book about disciplines for men who are trying to live a 'Godly' life. The chapters are easy to read and packed with life examples and scriptural passages to guide our thinking.
