About this deal

Thriller, deren Handlung in der Nachkriegszeit spielen, haben meiner Meinung nach schon was Einzigartiges an sich. So why only four stars well whilst music plays a significant part of the story, and I am afraid quite a lot of the in depth musical explanations went straight over my head and bored me. Rossel is sensitive and caring and on the surface seems wholly unsuited to his role as a harbinger of the rules and regulations that so strictly dictate society, and this makes him a compelling and interesting character. This was a quick read and a little girl seeing ghosts wasn't uninteresting but I wouldn't recommend it unless you are 12 or under, or usually love MG.

I once went on a ghost tour when I visited Edinburgh and I could see the places described in the book very clearly. Great book - brought all the horrors of wartime Leningrad and the utter deprivation the population suffered, to life. His hunt for the truth leads him to the dark heart of Leningrad's musical establishment, and ultimately to the highest levels of the Kremlin itself.

He grew up in a deprived area of Leicester, a city which is almost unique in terms of cultural mix and his style of writing is firmly grounded in the reality that he has seen around him since he was a child. This debut novel is gripping, becomes a real page turner and is orchestrated to a satisfyingly blood curdling finale. Since this was my first Victoria Schwab book I can finally say that I’m intrigued by her writing style. Because even though there didn’t happen a lot in this rather short fantasy book the writing style still kept me going and caused me to read on. I may have exaggerated a lot here but what I am trying to say is that this is a Middle Grade book and we should approach it as one.

It’s gripping story holds you spellbound in horror of the darkness that still pervades the Russian psyche today. The whole concept of their television series and having to travel to different locations for filming is so exciting; opening up numerous directions for this series to go in. Plus, this includes super creepy graveyard parts, and what horror fan doesn't love a good graveyard scare? The dialogue and every interaction from the story are so reliable for those times, they all were so wary about everything and everyone as you couldn’t trust anyone, you didn’t know if a family member or friend was your ally or your enemies.

As Cass travels the world with her TV host parents, they visit some of the world’s most haunted places - Edinburgh, Paris, New Orleans - and Cass is immersed in the City of Ghosts and all its dangers. While Victoria Schwab is a beloved author, this is actually the first book I have ever read from her.

Jacob lives in the realm of the living with Cassidy, but Cassidy now can open and enter the veil, and see the ghosts that are stuck within it. Da mir das Setting bei „Black Sun“ sehr gefallen hat, habe ich mich auf „Der kalte Glanz der Newa“ sehr gefreut!I wish I could travel back in time and hand myself a copy of this when I was younger as it is such an incredible read and it was a book I would have loved with all my heart and soul. I used to stay up all night in my room scared out of my mind watching it, so when I read the synopsis of this I knew I needed to read it. City of Ghosts is a middle grade novel that has such a perfect spooky atmosphere, and it’s set around scary places in Scotland. There's she meets a girl with the same gift as her and she figures that she has so much more to learn, especially when she realises the city of ghosts is more dangerous than she initialy thought.
